How to Cut Men’s Short Hair with Scissors

A men’s short scissor haircut is a classic style that can create a more textured, natural finish than a traditional clipper cut. In this post, I’ll demonstrate how to cut men’s short hair with scissors, using my go-to Gentleman’s Cut as an example on my fiancé. I’ll also explain the differences between scissor cuts and clipper cuts, the tools you’ll need, and what to consider when choosing between the two techniques.

Professionally, I’ve always preferred the natural look of scissor cuts over clipper cuts. Do you prefer the clean, consistent result of a clipper cut, or the softer, more textured look of a scissor cut? Both have their place, and understanding the difference can help you decide which is right for you.

Scissor Cut vs. Clipper Cut for Men

Even when cut to the exact same length, scissor cuts generally look quite a bit different than clipper cuts do. And one option isn’t necessarily better than the other, but most people do have their preference to which they like better.

Clipper cuts are very uniform, usually more blunt, and almost appear shorter because of how uniform they are. Barbers usually opt for clipper cuts. So if you normally prefer cuts from barbers over hairstylists, than you likely prefer clipper cuts.

Scissor cuts are usually much more textured, giving a piecier look that may appear longer. Hairstylists (cosmetologists) usually opt for scissor cuts before reaching for their clippers (unless the requested cut is very short). So if you prefer going to a hair salon instead of a barbershop, you likely prefer scissor cuts.

Below is an image that shows the general difference between the two. It’s AI generated, but should still give you the right idea for what to expect for each.

Tools Needed for a Men’s Scissor Haircut

While using kitchen scissors is not recommended, you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on scissors for haircuts unless you’re planning on getting your license and doing this for a living.

The scissors you use should only be used on hair. If they’re used to cut other things like paper, they’ll dull out immediately and can be ruined by misalinging the blades. The blades also need to be kept extremely sharp so that they don’t pull or rip the hair. Using dull scissors can actually damage the hair and cause split ends.

For the tutorial in the video below, I used a regular shear, a thinning shear, and trimmers to clean up the perimeter of the cut. I’ll link exactly what I use below, as well as a cheaper alternative.

Obviously the more you spend the better quality steel and longer they’ll last. I have a pair of shears that cost me over $1,000, while upwards of $5,000 is not unheard of. But you don’t need to overspend here if you’re not doing this for a living.

Frequently Asked Questions About Men’s Scissor Haircuts

Can you cut a man’s hair short with scissors? Absolutely! I have even seen skin fades done with scissors, though this is rather difficult to do. “Finger Length” is usually equivalent to a clipper guard #3, but obviously depends on the fingers!

Is a scissor cut better than a clipper cut? Not necessarily! It all depends on the preference of the client and the hair cutter. I know some hairstylists that won’t do clipper cuts at all, and I also know some who are fabulous at them. I’ve also had clients request scissor cuts only or vice versa!

How often should men get a short haircut? Typically the shorter the cut, the more often it needs done. But that’s only if you want to maintain the exact same look. I’ve had some clients that we cut it a little shorter than they love just because it lasts them a bit longer before they have to come back in. Skin fades need cut ever 2-4 weeks, while scissor cuts can generally go a little longer, more like 4-8 weeks.
