The Most Scenic Haircut Ever – On The Appalachian Trail

In this post I want to share about giving my boyfriend a haircut while he hikes the Appalachian trail! This was hands down the most scenic haircut I’ve ever given in my life, and I had a blast doing it. If only this is where I gave haircuts on a regular basis!

You can watch the haircut video on Youtube below:

My boyfriend is hiking the Appalachian trail

If you’re like me, then you know nothing about hiking, let alone hiking the Appalachian trail for that matter. All I knew prior was that the Appalachian trail was a LONG stretch of trail through the Appalachian mountains. I recall hearing of people going missing or even dying on the trail, but that’s about the extent of what I knew about it.

Well my boyfriend Arlan returned from working overseas in January (2024) and decided to take on the adventure of hiking the trail in its entirety. He started the Appalachian trail in February all the way down south in Georgia, and plans to finish up in Maine by mid July. So far he’s ahead of schedule, and I couldn’t be more proud of his progress!

Arlan began hiking 8 or so mile days, but now he regularly hikes 20 to 30 mile days. This sounds absolutely insane to me as a non-hiker. Luckily, so far the only issue he’s had up to this point are some hives that are likely from a pollen allergy. This allergic reaction has cleared right up with some allergy medication.

Low-maintenance haircut for a hiker

Before Arlan began the trail, he had a typical fade with a combover. But since starting the trail, his hair has understandably grown and grown. It’s been about 4 months since his last cut, and we actually really do like it as it’s grown.

Because of this, we decided to go with a longer cut that will grow out nicely without the need for frequent cleanups like his previous fade did. In order to do this, I just needed to reshape his hair with an all around scissor cut that will grow well into a longer mens haircut.

Once you add in the beard and mustache cleanup, he was looking like a new person. It’s crazy what a minimal haircut can do!

Haircuts on the Appalachian trail

When cutting his hair, I thought of a great idea for other hikers. Since the hikers are on the Appalachian trail for months on end, many of them don’t get their haircut at all the entire time. Some may be prepared for this, while others aren’t.

I thought that it could be extremely helpful for the hikers if I offered free haircuts to the through hikers. I would love to film some of these hikers haircuts, and allow them to tell their experiences of the trail on my Youtube channel.

If you’re a hiker yourself, or if this is something you would be interested in seeing, make sure you leave a comment below to let me know and I’ll be sure to make this happen!

Facts about the Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian trail goes from Georgia to Maine. It is nearly 2,200 miles long and is the longest “hiking only” trail in the entire world!

The trail goes through 14 states:

  • Georgia
  • Tennessee
  • North Carolina
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Maryland
  • Pennsylvania
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Connecticut
  • Massachutes
  • Vermont
  • New Hampshire
  • Maine

The elevation gain/loss of the entire Appalachian trail is equal to climbing Mt. Everest 16 times! Heckin wild!

The amount of people to have successfully hiked the trail all the way through is actually less than 22,000. Many people quit before reaching the halfway point.
