The Best Hair Product Brands

For me it’s impossible to pick one line that I can fully commit to. One day I’ll make my own hair product line, but until that day comes these are my favorite go-to’s.

Keep in mind that each brand has many other products that I haven’t listed here, I’ve just selected my favorites. If you find that you like a product from one of these lines, I highly suggest you look into their entire line because it’s likely they’ll have other products that are suitable for your hair type.

1. Aquage

MY-FAVORITES-FROM-AQUAGE

Aquage carries some incomparable hair styling products. The Sea Extend line carries the best products for frizzy hair and they work amazingly at smoothing and protecting unruly and curly hair. These products all block against humidity and protect the hair from heat damage. They also make some killer products for achieving volume, as I have yet to find a root lifter that works as well as their Uplifting Foam!

The best shine spray

  • Beyond Shine – A shine spray that triples as a thermal heat protectant and humidity-resistant spray that increases shine and iron performance. Spray generously 8-10 inches away from hair before ironing.

Best styling products for fine and thin hair

  • Uplifting Foam – This is my all time favorite mousse/root-lifter. Use half a golf-ball sized fluff, apply to your root area and style. It works best before you blow-dry!
  • Thickening Spray Gel – This product is wonderful for adding extra fullness to limp, fine, or thin hair. I prefer to use it prior to blow-drying in combination with the uplifting foam mentioned above!
  • Sea Salt Texturizing Spray – Creates that “beachy” soft-textured look. Spray to damp hair and dry with fingers or a diffuser. You can even just spray it into dry hair and scrunch to give it some “ummph”.

Best hair products for frizzy hair

  • Silkening Shampoo and Conditioner – Perfect for fragile, color treated, or curly hair. This combo helps to smooth down the cuticle, reduce frizz, and my favorite aspect–protect against humidity!
  • Silkening Oil Treatment – While this product has the term “treatment” in the name, I don’t consider it a treatment because you leave it in your hair and don’t rinse it out. It’s used for blow-drying, anti-frizz, anti-humidity, heat protection, and works wonders as a smoothing serum. It even cuts your blow-dry time down! I use this product on 90% of my clients before blow drying, and this is also a go-to for curly hair. Apply 1 pump evenly and blow it out or let it air dry.
  • Defining Gel – This is my absolute favorite hair product for curls. Use about a quarter sized glob on wet hair to define your curls and eliminate frizz. The hair can then be blowdried with a diffuser or air-dried. I mix this with the silkening oil treatment for the perfect curly hair concoction.

2. Pravana

A-MUST-HAVE-FOR-ANY-BLONDE

Pravana not only makes hair styling products, but they are also my favorite line for hair color as well. Since they manufacture color, they really know what the hair needs to preserve the color as long as possible, and their leave-in conditioner has SO many uses! They sit at a nice price point too and are extremely affordable.

The best product for removing minerals from the hair

  • Clear Cleanse – If you have hard water, this product is going to be your best friend! This shampoo diminishes minerals and removes build-up from the hair.

Best products for dry hair

  • Moisture Marvel Shampoo and Conditioner (Previously known as Intense Therapy) – This combo works wonders for replenishing lost moisture to dry and color treated hair. Especially great for softening coarse hair types.
  • Intense Therapy Treat Masque – This is a more intense and deeper conditioner from the one above. It sits on a little longer, penetrates deeper into the cortex, and should be used once a week or as needed.
  • Intense Therapy leave-in – This is a light weight detangler, leave-in conditioner, UV and heat protectant, is humidity resistant, and lowers the dryness caused by chlorine. Talk about jack of all trades! Spray a couple squirts when hair is damp, comb through and style.

Best hair product for blondes

  • Purple Shampoo and Purple Conditioner – These are phenomenal purple shampoos that will neutralize unwanted yellow tones from the hair. I often mix them with other shampoos and conditioners (like the moisture marvel) to get the benefits of both!
  • Leave-in Purple Conditioner – This should be used after every wash to detangle, smooth, and protect your hair. It will not weight your hair down, and the purple tone will enhance your blonde. This is the same leave-in conditioner as the Intense Therapy listed above, except this one helps to neutralize yellow tones!
  • Purple Masque – This masque is the same as the intense therapy treat masque above except in purple for blondes! It continues to neutralize those unwanted yellow tones to keep your blonde or silver hair as icy as possible while repairing damaged and broken bonds.

3. Amika

AMIKA-PERK-UP-DRY-SHAMPOO

Amika has in my opinion, the best dry shampoo on the market. And they also make great hair tools as well. Check out my post here if you’d like to see some of their tools that I personally recommend!

The best dry shampoo

  • Perk Up Dry Shampoo – This was their first dry shampoo that took the world by storm. It doesn’t leave a residue, absorbs oils, and smells great. Works well for all hair types. Spray at your root area, rub in with your fingers, and style. Literally life changing!
  • Perk Up Plus Dry Shampoo – This dry shampoo is a spin-off of the original, and is formulated to help you extend your washes even more days, especially when used each day.
  • Perk Up Ultra Dry Shampoo (Max Oil Control) – This dry shampoo is formulated for those with very oily hair and scalps (raises hand). If you’re an oily girl, this hair product will become your best friend.

The best texture spray

  • Un.Done Texture Spray – This is my favorite texture spray. As Amika says, it’s “sexy-in-a-bottle” and they aren’t lying. It adds volume and texture to give you the ultimate “un-done” look. I like to use it after curling my hair, I flip my head upside down and spray it in while messing up with my fingers.

Best treatment for dry scalp

  • Pink Charcoal Cleansing Oil – I discovered this product while I was on Accutane, and it did WONDERS for hydrating my dry, flaking scalp. You’ll use this prior to washing as a pre-treatment.

4. Olaplex

KEY-FOR-STRENGTHENING-DAMAGED-HAIR

Olaplex is my go-to brand when it comes to damaged hair. They started off as an in-salon only product line with additives for hair color to reduce the damage that’s caused to hair during the bleaching process, but they’ve since diversified to an entire retail hair product line.

Best hair product for repairing damaged hair

  • No. 0 Pre Treatment Spray – This treatment spray is meant to enhance the effects of the No. 3 treatment. This preps the hair to absorb the bond builder and shouldn’t be used alone, but in combination with No. 3.
  • No. 3 – This is a bond-repairing conditioning treatment. Use this on wet hair BEFORE you shampoo and condition. Leave it in for a MINIMUM of 10 minutes, then shampoo and condition it out. I recommend using this at least once a week to help strengthen and repair your hair. If you have severely damaged hair, use this with No. 0 and use it everytime you wash your hair.
  • No. 4 Shampoo and 5 Conditioner – These can be used regularly, especially if you have chemically damaged hair. I’ve noticed that they make the hair feel a little fuller as well.
  • No. 4 Purple Shampoo and 5 Purple Conditioner – This purple shampoo is currently the strongest on the market. If you leave it on for long and use it every time, it can actually tint your hair purple! That being said, it is AMAZING at toning down unwanted yellow tones.

5. Celeb Luxury

CELEB-LUXURY-LIGHT-PINK-COLORWASH

If you’re looking for a coloring shampoo or conditioner, this is your brand. These shampoos and conditioners will deposit semi-permanent color into your hair, rather than fading your current color. And when you’re done with the color, just stop using them and the color will fade away completely on it’s own.

Coloring Shampoos and Conditioners

  • Colorwash and Colorditioner Shampoos and Conditioners – I love sending these home with reds and other colors that fade quickly. They are also great options to help you grow out old highlights and transition back to your natural hair color. Check both the colorwash and colorditioners because they have different colors for each!

6. Kenra

KENRA-DRY-CONDITIONER

Kenra is my favorite go-to for general products. They have been in the game for a long time and have MANY different types of products out there. If I’m in the market for a new and relatively unknown type of product (like a dry conditioner), Kenra is usually the one I look to first because I know they’ll have one.

The best hair products for hold

  • Hot Spray – This spray works wonders for providing long lasting hold when ironing the hair. It doubles as a thermal protectant, and won’t leave any residue on your irons. This is my go-to product for straight hair that doesn’t want to hold a curl, but it works wonders the other way around as well.
  • Volume Hairspray – This is my favorite hairspray on the market. I love using these when doing any special event styling because it provides a firm hold without making the hair feel tacky. It also protects against humidity as well!

Best products for volume

  • Volume Shampoo and Conditioner – This shampoo conditioner set increases volume by up to 45% without weighing the hair down.
  • Platinum Blow-Dry Spray – This spray will help you achieve a bombshell blowout from home! It protects from heat and humidity while increasing volume and body.

The best dry conditioners

  • Dry Conditioning Oil – This is one of the most underrated products on the market in my opinion! If you hate that gritty feeling that dry shampoo leaves, struggle with staticky hair, or have a coarse/rough hair type, you’ll love this product. You’ll spray it on as a finishing spray to seal your cuticle and soften your hair.
  • Dry Oil Control Spray – If you love the idea of a dry conditioner but want something that provides a little hold, this is the spray you’re looking for. This works wonders for getting flyaway hairs to stay down. It has a medium and flexible hold, so it’s not too sticky or strong.

7. Paul Mitchell

Paul Mitchell is another brand that’s been in the game for a long time, and reasonably so. In my opinion, they have the best scalp-care line on the market!

The best hair product for scalp care

  • Tea Tree Shampoo & Conditioner, and Treatment – This is my favorite product for anyone struggling with scalp issues. The tea tree ingredients will sooth and exfollioate the scalp while providing moisture to reduce flakes.

The best products for thinning hair

  • Regeniplex Shampoo, Conditioner, and Tonic – This three step kit will help protect the hair from further breakage and prep the hair for new growth.

Conclusion

As a stylist, I’ve developed some favorite brands that are my go-tos when it comes to ALL different hair types. I’ve narrowed my favorites down to 7 different brands that each have specific hair types that they serve best.

These favorites are: Aquage, Pravana, Amika, Olaplex, Celeb Luxury, Kenra, and Paul Mitchell.

Aside from my favs listed above, there are tons of other amazing brands out there that some stylists prefer over these, it is all just personal preference! A few others that I wanted to include are Redken, Joico, IGK, Matrix, Sebastian, and Schwarzkopf. I highly suggest checking out their sites as well and testing what works best for you.

If you aren’t sure if you’ll love the product, just buy the small size to begin with so you aren’t stuck with an entire container of product that sits in your cabinet for years!
