How To: Fall Mahogany Peekaboo Lowlights on Blonde Hair

If you’re looking for the best way to spice up your blonde hair for fall, look no further because I’ve got you covered! In this post, I walk you through why this mahogany peekaboo look is a great option for blondes looking to add a seasonal touch to their hair, what hair coloring products to use, and exactly how to achieve this gorgeous color from home.

FALL-HAIR-COLOR-FOR-BLONDES

A common struggle I see with blondes is how to change their color for each season while still maintaining an overall blonde look. You don’t need to keep your hair the same shade all year long, nor should you! It’s not uncommon to get bored and want to switch things up a little without doing something detrimental to maintaining your blonde hair.

Fall Hair Color for Blondes

Because of the light canvas, blondes have the most options when it comes to hair color choices. It’s very easy to change the hair to any color of your choosing, while the same isn’t always true for our darker-haired friends.

With a blonde canvas, you have unlimited options of copper, strawberry, blush, red, and mahogany, which embrace all the warm and cozy fall vibes.

That said, red shades are one of the most difficult colors to remove from the hair. So you need to make sure that you’re not going to make a change that you’ll come to regret in the springtime when you’re ready to be all over bright blonde again.

Below, I’m going to cover some top considerations before dyeing your hair for fall. This is meant to help guide you to the exact shade and color placement that suits you and won’t hold you back in the future.

Why I chose Peekaboo’s instead of traditional Lowlights or All-Over Color

Peekaboos are a super easy way to add pops of color to blonde hair without a ton of risk or commitment. All-over color is a higher risk because it’s more difficult to remove red from a few sections of your hair than it is from your entire head.

Peekaboo’s are also a great option if you want to try a shade that isn’t necessarily a perfect match for your skin tone. Adding a few pops of the color will not wash you out like it would if it were all over your entire head. See this post here to determine what colors best suit your skin tone.

And I personally find lowlights to blend in too much with blonde, oftentimes taking away from the brightness. It becomes more of a subtle or even stripey look that darkens the overall color and grows out poorly (see image below).

So when adding color to blonde hair, I find that less is more. Peekaboo’s allow you to add pops of color while leaving the majority of your blonde hair alone, which maintains the overall brightness of your hair. This not only keeps you feeling like a blonde, but it also emphasizes the pops of color added (see image below).

Why I chose Mahogany instead of Copper or Red

Before I applied this mahogany color, I performed multiple test strands in my hair to determine what color looked best with my current blonde shade, skin tone, and what grew out and faded the best. See this post here for how to perform a test strand.

The warmer copper shades faded to a light orange tone, and in blonde hair, this honestly looks like unintentional brassy blonde. And not only do I know that I personally look better in cooler hair colors, but I also didn’t want the Peekaboo’s to fade to an unflattering orange/brassy shade. This is not uncommon with copper colors when your starting canvas is blonde.

Mahogany is a cool red, which will fade more on the pink spectrum than the orange spectrum. This is much better for me overall from start to finish.

Conclusion

Being a blonde doesn’t mean that you can’t play with fall hair colors, it’s the opposite, really! You actually have more options for warm, cozy shades as a blonde because of your light, blank canvas.

That said, reds and coppers can be difficult to remove from your hair and get back to a bright blonde shade by the springtime. So because of this, opting for peekaboo’s are a fantastic option to play with fall colors without fully committing to something you’ll regret in the future.

Peekaboo’s allow you to maintain your bright overall blonde look while emphasizing a fun pop of color for the season.

And when selecting the shade of your Peekaboo’s, consider how the color looks against your skin tone, as well as how the color fades out of your hair. I love mahogany because of its cool undertones.

Mahogany fades on the pink spectrum rather than the orange spectrum, like coppers and most reds do. Because of this, the color won’t appear brassy blonde after a few washes, and it will still look intentional for weeks to come!
