How To: Bixie Haircut Tutorial (Feather Razor Cut)

I think it’s safe to say that the bixie haircut is trending in 2024. I’ve seen many variations of this cut online as well as requests from several clients over the last year. I even did this cut on my own mom! In this post I’ll tell you all about the bixie cut; what it is, who it’s best for, and at the bottom of this post you can find my tutorial video I made while giving this haircut to my own mother!

What is a bixie haircut?

The bixie cut is a mixture between a bob and a pixie. It is shorter than your typical bob, but longer than a pixie.

The main characteristics of this cut are very similar to a bob where the hair can be stacked in the back, but the top of the hair is layered and cut shorter than a usual bob. The front pieces are also framed around the face giving texture up front similarly to a pixie.

In a typical bob the hair is undercut so that the hair on the nape and the sides of the head all lays down and under. But on the bixie, I like to style the hair flipping up in the back and on the sides, while taking the crown of the hair up and under, creating volume.

What face shape is best for a bixie cut?

Since this cut is so versatile, it can be customized to fit a variety of different face shapes. Ultimately when it comes to face shapes, you generally want to make the face appear as oval as possible. To do this, you will use the hair to either add height or width to the face. You can also utilize bangs to cover a large forehead.

Below I’ll give a few examples of how to make this cut work for different face shape situations. To learn more about face shapes and haircuts, see my post here.

Oblong face shape

For a long face, I suggest styling this cut with the sides flipping out. This will add width to the sides of the head to take the eyes off of the length of the face.

You can also add a full bang to this cut to decrease some of the length from the forehead and draw the eyes from side to side.

If you have a long face, take a look at images I’ve used for this post. My mom has a long face so I used this cut to create width on her sides.

Round face shape

For a round face, I suggest styling the sides of the hair under and down rather than flipped up and out. This is to reduce the width on the sides and to pull the eyes down.

You should also part the hair with a side bang instead of a full straight bang. This will open up the center of the forehead adding length to the top without drawing the eyes straight across.

Heart or upside down triangle face shape

With a heart or upside down triangle face shape, you likely have a large forehead with a narrow chin. The bixie cut is great for this face shape because you can use the bang area to hide the forehead as well as open up the chin.

You have two options when it comes to opening up the chin area. First, you can cut the hair shorter around the face and leave the jawline exposed. This keeps this area open without reducing the already narrow chin area.

The second way is to leave the sides a little longer. If you grow the hair a little longer at the jawline, you can then style the hair flipped out to add width to the chin area reducing how narrow it is. This will create balance throughout the face.

Diamond face shape

For the diamond face shape, you’ll want to open up the forehead and chin area while reducing width near the cheek bones.

I recommend parting the hair and wearing a side bang instead of a straight bang to keep the top of the face open instead of closed and narrow.

The sides of the hair should be worn forward near the cheek bone region. This will minimize the excess width in this area. I would not recommend flipping the sides out as that will just increase the width at the cheek bones.

The jawline should be kept open to avoid minimizing it further. This creates balance throughout the entire face.

Is a bixie good for fine hair?

The bixie cut is perfect for fine hair, as are both pixies and bobs. This is because these are all short cuts that are above the shoulders. While length isn’t necessarily bad for fine hair, fine hair gets weighed down easily and can have a hard time achieving volume.

The biggest complaint I hear from clients with fine hair is that their hair seems flat and stuck to their head. With the hair cut above the shoulders, as well as the layers and texturizing that comes with this cut, fine hair is able to achieve maximum volume with a bixie.

I recommend blow drying this cut for the best possible results, but it will also maintain a good amount of volume on its own without any aid. This is because the cut is very texturized with bulk removed (when cut properly). This allows the hair to look good even in a wind storm!

The best haircut for women over 60

FLIPPED-OUT

Personally, I think this is one of the best haircut options for women over 60. As we age, everything begins to droop down, unfortunately. This is why shorter haircuts are better for women as they get older. The shorter hair gives the face a facelift. It pulls the eyes upwards, while long hair pulls the eyes down.

The bixie cut is an adorable cut that has style and tons of volume. It is spunky and cute while pulling the eyes up instead of down, taking years off of older women.

That being said, the bixie cut is not an old lady haircut! There are plenty of teens and young women that are rocking this cut adorably as well.

I mentioned earlier about styling this haircut to give the appearance of an oval face. Below in my Youtube video, you can see how I styled this cut for my mom, who has a long face.

You can either part the bangs or wear them straight across, flip the sides up and out or turn them under.

Conclusion

The bixie haircut is trending in 2024. This popular short haircut is a mixture between a bob and a pixie.

This cut can be customized based on your face shape to create balance and make the face appear as oval as possible. Face shapes that are ideal for a bixie cut:

  • Oval
  • Oblong
  • Round
  • Heart or upside down triangle
  • Diamond

The bixie cut is perfect for those with fine hair. This is because it’s a short cut with lots of layers and texturizing to remove bulk that weights the hair down. Fine hair can achieve maximum volume and style with this haircut.

I also highly recommend this cut to women over 60. Short hair pulls the eyes up instead of down, which is why short cuts are better for older women. This cut adds tons of style and lift to the face which is why it’s the perfect choice for aging skin.

This cut is also adorable on younger girls in their teens and 20s. It is spunky and fun, and most certainly not an old lady haircut!
