As a blonde, you may have a hard time deciding what hair color to go with when we’re supposed to transition to reds and coppers. You want to join in on the trends, but you also don’t want to go too dark or lose your blonde hair. That’s why strawberry blonde is a great choice!

Warm hair colors are in for fall

Typically in autumn we opt for warmer colors. This means different shades of reds, coppers, golds, and violets. We’ll stay away from cooler colors like ash brown, silver, and mushroom.

Unfortunately, not everyone can pull off super warm shades. But I’m going to share a secret as to how you can navigate this if cooler tones work better for your skin.

Who can pull off a strawberry blonde hair color?

Fortunately, there are ways that you can pull off a strawberry blonde color even if your skin looks best in cooler colors.

Did you know that there are cool coppers and warm coppers? Cool reds and warm reds? Even though copper and red are traditionally warm colors, they can be made into a cooler shade by mixing a cooler tone into them.

For example, mahogany is a cool red. If mahogany is mixed with copper, you’re left with a cool copper shade.

In the next section below I’ll go over how you can do this with strawberry blonde. And for a deeper dive into choosing the best hair color based on your skin tone, take a look at my post here.

How to choose the best strawberry blonde hair color

Typically, you don’t want to look the same color as your skin. So keeping some contrast is a good rule of thumb. You’ll want your hair color to be at least 2 levels lighter or darker than your skin.

And if you have fair warm skin, or medium to dark cool skin you’ll want to stick to cooler colors. This doesn’t mean that you can’t pull off a strawberry blonde though. You’ll just want to stick to cooler coppers, mahogany shades, and cool reds. Otherwise, you’ll likely feel a bit washed out. Take a look at the image below for an example of what will work best for you.

If you have fair cool skin or medium to dark warm skin, you’ll want to opt for warmer colors. These are the warm coppers, golds, caramels, and butterscotch colors. These shades will accentuate your skin much better than cooler shades will. Take a look at the image below for an example of what will work best for you.

How to get a strawberry blonde hair color

Now that you know if you should opt for a cool strawberry blonde or a warm strawberry blonde, let’s figure out how to get you there.

If you’re already blonde, going to a strawberry shade will be a very simple task. All you’ll need to do is tone your hair or add low lights of your desired shade. Take a look at my Youtube video below where I did this exact process on one of my mannequins.

But if you’re a darker color needing to go lighter to get to your desired strawberry blonde shade, this will be a little more work. If you’re going for a warm strawberry blonde, you can lighten your hair to a level 7-8 and you shouldn’t need a whole lot of toning. The underlining pigment in the hair is warm, so you’re already on your way.

If you’re dark and heading to a cool strawberry blonde, you’ll need to lighten the hair to a level 9-10 so that the underlining warmth in the hair is removed. once the yellow undertones are lightened out of the hair, you can then tone down with your cool strawberry tone.

If you’re feeling stuck with what to tone your hair with to get to your desired shade, take a look at my post here on the color wheel.

Conclusion

Warmer hair colors like reds, coppers, golds, and violets are always a popular choice for autumn. As a blonde, this means opting for a strawberry blonde hair color.

Anyone can pull off a strawberry blonde color as long as you choose the right shade. There are warm coppers and cool coppers, so no matter what your skin tone is you can find a shade that will work well for you.

  • If you have fair warm skin or dark cool skin you’ll want to choose cooler tones such as cool coppers, mahogany, and violets.
  • If you have fair cool skin or dark warm skin you’ll want to choose warmer tones such as golds, warm coppers, caramel, and butterscotch.
